History of BCHPA

The association was formed in the early 1970’s to respond to demands for a voice to represent our interests to Government of Canada and the Hang gliding Paragliding Association of Canada (HPAC) and the FAI.

The existence of our association was soon noted by federal agencies, notably Transport Canada, who were concerned about the safety record of the sport and the consequences to other aviators using this new form of recreational aviation.

They soon realized that our efforts were producing tangible results in bringing the many existing clubs in BC together which culminated in the fact that this fringe element of the aviation community secured the extra-ordinary authority to self-regulate its own activities; subject to Canadian Aviation Regulations.

The founding directors designed the association to represent the consensus of opinion of its Regional Associations. The HGABC (as it was then called) was given the role of supporting liaison between the local clubs, municipal, provincial and federal governments, Transport Canada and the HPAC.

The BCHPA fell into dormancy for a few years when the membership couldn't decide what they wanted some people wanted the BCHPA's help in securing their sites and some area's had a strong enough local club that they didn't need help from the BCHPA.

Since that time the BCHPA has revamped and started offering help in the way of funding should a local club qualify for site maintenance, security and safety.

The BCHPA also has moderate funding available to BC competition pilots who wish to compete abroad.

It also helps support competitions which are held in BC.

All Pilots who live in BC and have HPAC insurance (which is mandatory to fly most sites in BC) are members of the BCHPA. See our policy page if you think that you qualify for a project assistance.
