Paragliding is certainly not for everyone, but those who do have the courage to take part really do seem to love this exciting sport. A paraglider is a free flying and foot launched aircraft that can be powered, but is usually unpowered in nature. The basic craft consists of a fabric parachute-like wing, suspension lines, and a suspended harness for the pilot. Paragliding has evolved since the 1950s when governable parachutes were experimented with on the way to creating this new flying craft. Paragliding is an exciting spectacle that is often seen on television and in movies in action scenes and documentaries. Some paragliding mishaps sometimes even make their way onto TV comedy shows.
Paragliders feature a wing which is known as a parafoil or an airfoil, which is basically two distinct layers of fabric that have been connected to an internal supporting material in order to form a row of cells. The pilot is suspended under this wing structure by a network of lines that distribute the load and support the pilot in a harness. While paragliding equipment is fairly simple in nature, it took a long time to refine the different elements into what is now recognisable as the modern paragliding craft. The parachute wing can be too large for many home storage solutions and often needs to be stored in a carport or garage environment.
Paragliding is probably too extreme of a sport for many folks, however, most people have come across it at some time on TV and in the movies. While extreme sport mishap programs may not be as popular as watching Del Boy on only fools and horses and other classic comedy sitcoms, it can certainly be very amusing watching someone who is unsuccessfully trying to fly and only managing to hit the ground time and time again. Paragliding is an amazing sport, even if the vast majority of people are too scared to actually try it out. For those people who do have a paraglider stored away in their garage however, it is a sport and a recreation that is unparalleled in terms of pure excitement and fun
