A good place to do some great XC but mainly in a southerly direction. One farmer past Edgewater hates gliders landing in his fields. He has pointed guns and physically attacked pilots! DO NOT LAND BETWEEN EDGEWATER AND RADIUM (75 to 90 km from launch). Avoid crop fields. We strongly suggest you contact local pilots (Golden or Calgary) before flying. Three Class E Controlled Airspace Airways through Spillimacheen, Radium and Canal Flats have bases at 2200’ AGL to 12,500’ ASL. Class B from 12,500’ to 18,000’ ASL.

Additional Information:
Excellent XC site (202 mile HG flight, 146 km PG flights) on an 8000'+ Range. Paved road retrieval. Nice valley with many other attractions. Strong thermal site that should only be flown by experienced pilots in mid-day. "Owens Valley North", but a lot more pleasant on the ground! Famous glass-offs in the evening: sun is up late in mid-summer. The whole valley can be lifting well past dark. Main hangout: Golden Municipal Campground Tel. 250-344-5412

Panorma , with over 4000' vertical feet, is now open for Paragliding. Breathtaking scenery surrounding an intimate mountain retreat style village, a world class mountain with over 4000 vertical feet (1200 meter) of exiting skiing and paragliding right to your door! From double black diamond glade skiing to uncrowded wide open groomed cruising to exclusively novice only trails, Panorama truly is for everyone... Then there's more... on the edge of the famous Bugaboos, Panorama comprises part of the largest Heli-ski region in the world.

Access: Panorama is located 2 hours SW of Banff in the spectacular B.C. Rockies. From the parking lot you use first the chair lifts and than you use the last two T-bar lifts to the top.

(Please) Do's and Don'ts for Flying at Panorama:
DO Pick up all your garbage on launch and at the Landing field.
DON'T Fly above the Panorama village and the Heli-Plex.
DO Land at the marked Landing Field.
DO Launch from the marked launch site. DON'T Fly in to the no fly zone (Helicoper)
DON'T Cross the valley (Helicopter traffic)
DO Allow min. 300 feet or 100m distance to lifts and ski slopes.
DO Your best to maintain good relations with the skiers, the locals, and anyone else who could have any kind of negative impact on the positive reception we get in the valley.
DON'T Perform tandem flights.
DO Patronize the local business community.
DO Read the Flying Suggestions and follow them.

Flying Suggestions:
Here are a few suggestions which may be of use to those unfamiliar with flying a paraglider at Panorama. They are based on the experience of paraglider pilots who have been flying the area. There is no guarantee that you will be safe even if you follow all these guidelines.
1. Do not take off if the average wind speed is over 20 km/hour; winds aloft may be even higher. When deciding whether to fly or not, bear in mind the performance differences of various gliders and differences in the level of risk various pilots are willing to assume. Also be aware that wind speeds in the valley may be higher than, or lower than, or in a different direction from those at peak-top level.
2. Do not drift behind any of the peaks in a thermal unless you are at least 150 meters above them and your angle with respect to the peak is less than 30-45 degrees.
If you leave the thermal into head wind and sink, you may be unable to glide out to the valley. It may take a day or two to walk out from the wrong side of the range.
3. Continually keep an eye on the wind direction aloft and on the ground, as indicated by flags, ponds, cloud drift, thermal drift, etc. Panorama is known for sudden changes in wind speed and direction. Be especially observant if there are storm clouds:: gust fronts of 50-70 km/hour have been experienced up to 20 km away from storms crossing the valley

Additional Landing Info: Watch for X-county skiers. Please do what you can to enhance the image of our sport and to ensure we continue to be welcome visitors at this great site.

Exhilarating, panoramic views of the Columbia Valley, 1000m below the summit and if you think that is good, the view from the air will knock your socks off. Launch is a 300’ vertical climb up a narrow switchback trail from the parking area. (10 - 20 minutes so pack water.) The 100 ton gypsum rock trucks are on a private road, travel at 60 MPH run 5 days a week and stop for nothing! Stay East of the Hyw due to the Airport. Class E Controlled Airspace from 2200’ AGL to 12,500’ ASL Class B above due to Airway V317-342.

Launch Directions:
2.7 km south of Invermere turn left onto Windermere Loop Road. and cross Swansea Road. At 3.2 km turn left over the Westroc Gypsum Mine Haul Road onto the signed Mt. Swansea Forest Service Road. 5 km to the Mt. Swansea Road parking area and trailhead. Road is very narrow with numerous switchbacks. Drive carefully with headlights on.

Upper Launch:
Trail to Mt. Swansea Summit From the parking area this short steep trail leads west to the summit - a 15 to 20 minute hike gaining 105 m elevation.
Trail to Mt. Swansea Ridge) From the parking area walk about 100m back on the road and then turn left to the Mt. Swansea trail - a hike of 15 minutes gaining 90 m elevation to the top of the ridge. It is a nice grassy south west launch site - ideal for Paragliding beginners. Paragliders can Land at a good flat field south of Mt. Swansea close at the Windermere Golf Course (it’s too small for hang gliders.) It is a wide open field that you can use in an emergency.
Lower launch half way up is a shorter hike accessed from the first half of the mid way parking area. It works well in spring. Good idea to put up wind steamers below and to side of launch since cross winds are common, particularly on south or light-wind days. Thermals coming up the 500’ cliff face below launch can be violent and throw you into the cliff face (Its been done!) The Gypsum Rd LZ can be a LONG glide from lower launch in a north wind. So take note of wind speed and direction before you fly. Best to use the swamp LZ.

Flying Season: Assign value 0,1,2,3 0r 4 (highest)
Spring 4 Summer 4 Fall 3 Winter 0
Type of Site: Mtn
Type of Flying: Ridge/Thermal
XC Potential: Good

Description of Launch:
Shallow launch suitable for S/SW/W/NW winds. Sometimes referred to as the Estella site, because launch is from the old mine access road. Several launches allow a range of acceptable wind directions, with the highest and best one facing SW.

Description of LZ:
There is only ONE acceptable place to land after a sled run: the triangular field next to Lazy Lake (N of launch). PGers are usually unable to glide to the LZ without a tail wind. The local farmers are almost all unhappy about gliders landing in their fields, with the closest, most inviting fields owned by an especially adamant individual named Lloyd Jones.

Vehicle / Transportation Requirements: Any Vehicle
HPAC Skill Level Requirements: Student, Nov., Int. or Adv.
Mild Conditions Int. Moderate Conditions Adv. Strong Conditions Adv
Skill Level Verification Requirements: HPAC Rating: Int. or Adv
Site Regulation: HPAC Insurance

Other Information:
HAZARDS: All the precautions used in mountain flying should be observed at Estella. The only real pucker factor comes in over the landing field, when you see how switchy the breeze can become. This small field generates a lot of thermals, and a number of advanced pilots have broken gliders in it due to turbulence. Later in the day, during calm or glass-off conditions it's OK. It's possible to launch Paragliders from 2 of the launch sites, but they are usually unable to glide to the LZ without a tail wind.
Class E Controlled Airspace from 2200’ AGL to 12,500’ ASL Class B above due to Airways V112, V305, V342 and V300.
Local pilot, James Swansburg owns the Wasa Lakeside Bed and Breakfast. Email: swanys@cyberlink.bc.ca

It’s strongly recommended that you fly with a local pilot for the first time. Apart from the bomb out LZ this is a nice site to fly with fantastic scenery. Field is very small and surrounded by trees and power lines. Cows may also be present and thermals break off from the LZ.

Launch Directions:
Turn onto Wasa Loop Rd. After several hundred meters, turn right on Lazy Lake Rd. Road turns to gravel after about 3 km, keep going until you hit pavement again. After 300m, slow down and turn right onto an unmarked logging road. If you get to the large field with the signs that say "NO GLIDERS", you've gone too far!. Long, heavy-duty 2WD road will take you past several launch sites (2 of 'em ramps). Best launch is the 4th one, facing SW.

Landing Directions:
Landing deserves some special mention. The local farmers are almost all unhappy about gliders landing in their fields, with the closest, most inviting fields owned by an especially adamant individual named Lloyd Jones. Please do not make the situation worse for local pilots by further disturbing any landowners! If you gain much altitude at all, landing west, beyond Wasa Lake on the overgrown runway strip is OK (it's an unused portion of the old highway).
